When I bought my 911 SC back in 2017, I was instantly smitten. The classic style, the engineering, the amazing driving experience….and all the tweaks and fixes that a 40+ year old car brings with it. Some were big, some were small, and I found myself working down a long list of projects to make the car run and look better. One thing that puzzled me was the stock shift knob; molded out of black plastic, it seemed out of character for Porsche to put something so plain and basic in the cockpit when it should be the crown jewel. Since I’ve been a woodworker and fabricator for most of my life, I made myself a new knob out of some black walnut and swapped out the stock knob. That led to another and then another and then I went down that slippery slope, refining my techniques and processes along the way. I enjoyed making the knobs but I could only use one at a time, so either I needed more classic P-cars (sadly not an option), or I could share them with other Porsche owners. I set up an Etsy shop and started offering them. Since then, I’ve made and sold dozens of knobs and shipped them all over the US and Europe. I started getting requests for custom knobs, and I’ve enjoying making knobs for all sorts of cars, from high-end restorations in Germany to a knob of segmented Cherry that matched a wooden vase the owner’s father made long ago. I’ve made knobs from walnut, mahogany, maple, wenge, cocobolo, ebony, and many other species. I even made one from a pine stave from a 100 year old brewery vat. I’ve developed processes to use a laser engraver and colored epoxies to create finely detailed shift patterns and designs. I’ve stained knobs to match custom steering wheels and developed new methods for mounting knobs in cars with threaded shift levers. I’ve even done a couple for other makes such as Alfa-Romeo, but P-cars are my true love. Can I make one for yours?
