Originally I started turning shift knobs for my own 911 so I could retire the stock black plastic knob and replace it with something more beautiful and sensual, and nothing beats a figured hardwood or an exotic tropical species for that. I went through several prototypes before I refined the techniques and processes, and before I knew it I had a half dozen knobs ready to go. Rather than build a new 6 car garage and fill it with classic Porsches, my wife suggested I sell the extra knobs instead. Since I'm an obedient and attentive husband, I readily agreed and decided to set up this Etsy shop instead.

All of these knobs are handmade and unique. I turn them on a wood lathe and laser and typically engrave the Porsche 915 transmission 5 speed gear pattern on top. I can do other patterns, such as for the 901 with the reverse on the top left. For best contrast, the engraving is left natural on lighter woods and painted with oil-based enamel or epoxy on darker woods (at least most of the time). The knobs are finished with 3 to 4 coats of a polyurethane topcoat; mostly in high gloss but sometimes I'll use a satin finish if the wood grain demands it.

Mounting instructions: Each knob is drilled with a 15mm hole that is designed to slide onto a 915 shift lever. If it's not tight enough, try wrapping a couple turns of painter's or masking tap on the lever first until you can twist the knob onto the lever snugly.
